After the triumphant success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, fans of the action series won't have to wait another 36 years for a new chapter. Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the series, recently revealed that a third Top Gun film is in development at Paramount, with Tom Cruise set to return to the role of the legendary pilot Maverick. In an interview with Screen Rant, Bruckheimer shared details on the project's progress, confirming that Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski have agreed on a story they're both excited about for Top Gun. However, the main obstacle remains Cruise's busy schedule, currently busy on the set of Mission: Impossible 8. “Tom is amazing,” Bruckheimer said.

“We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful idea for the story and he said, 'I really like it,' so we're developing it. But you never know when it will be made because Tom is very busy. He's filming Mission: Impossible right now. Hopefully, we'll get a script that everyone likes and we'll be back in the air." The main problem for Top Gun seems to be the work of Cruise, currently busy filming Mission: Impossible 8, the sequel to the acclaimed Dead Reckoning. However, Paramount remains hopeful that Cruise can find time to return to the role that made him an action legend.

The enthusiasm for a third chapter of Top Gun is palpable among lovers of the film series, considering the extraordinary success of Maverick, nominated for an Oscar as best film and with takings that exceeded 1.5 billion dollars. While details on the plot and cast of Top Gun 3 remain under wraps at the moment, director Kosinski is likely to return to direct the film, with new faces such as Glen Powell and Miles Teller returning.
