It seemed to have come to an end with the controversial fourth chapter Matrix Resurrections, but no: the Matrix saga, born way back in 1999 by the brilliant minds of Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, will continue with a fifth chapter. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has given the mandate to Drew Goddard, director of 7 Strangers at the El Royale and screenwriter of World War Z and Survivor – The Martian, to develop and direct a new film.
Warner Bros. announces the fifth chapter of The Matrix: will the protagonist still be Keanu Reeves?
According to the first rumors, the fifth chapter of The Matrix "will extend the franchise in an unprecedented way". Although the plot is top secret, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the new film could represent a sort of reboot for the saga, definitively saying goodbye to the character of Neo, played by Keanu Reeves. “Drew (Goddard, ed.) came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the world of The Matrix, both honoring what Lana and Lilly started more than 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his love of the series and the characters,” Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement.
“It's not hyperbole to say that the Matrix films changed cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly's artistry inspires me daily, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories set in their world,” were the first words of an enthusiastic Drew Goddard. The Matrix 5 will be executive produced by Lana Wachowski. The fourth chapter, released at Christmas 2021, was received rather coldly by critics and also by the public, grossing only 140 million dollars worldwide. Nonetheless, the saga as a whole recorded a total gross of approximately 1.8 million dollars against a total budget of 550 million.
