Big news for Karthi fans—the much-awaited Sardar 2 has finally wrapped up shooting, and I’m so excited to see what’s coming! The team just finished their last schedule in Thailand, celebrating at Hua Hin Airport on June 7, 2025. Directed by P.S. Mithran, this Tamil spy thriller is the sequel to the 2022 hit Sardar, and it’s now heading into post-production with a release planned for later this year, maybe around December 2025.
Karthi, who’s back as both the legendary spy Sardar Chandra Bose and his son, Inspector Vijay Prakash, couldn’t hold back his excitement. He shared, “That’s a wrap! What an adventure it’s been!” And what a journey it was—the shoot went on for over 100 days, taking the crew all over the place, from Chennai and Hyderabad to Bangkok, and even as far as Cambodia, China, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. That’s a lot of stamps on their passports! The Thailand part was apparently a blast, with some high-energy action scenes and a few lighter moments. Malavika Mohanan, one of the new faces in the cast, called it the “most fun schedule” of the whole film.
This time around, Karthi’s joined by some familiar and fresh talent. Rajisha Vijayan is back from the first movie, and we’ve got Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, S.J. Suryah, and Yogi Babu jumping in too. S.J. Suryah is playing the big bad guy, “Black Dagger,” who got introduced in a teaser back on March 31, 2025, during Eid al-Fitr. That teaser got over 2.5 million views in just 24 hours, showing Karthi’s character gearing up for a huge mission that starts in Cambodia and moves to China. It’s looking like a proper international spy adventure!
The team behind the scenes is top-notch too. Sam C.S., who did the music for Kaithi, stepped in as the composer after Yuvan Shankar Raja, who was supposed to do it originally. George C. Williams is handling the camera, and Vijay Velukutty is on editing duties. Things weren’t always smooth, though—they had a tough moment in July 2024 when stuntman Ezhumalai sadly passed away after a fall during an action scene in Chennai. Karthi also had a small leg injury while shooting in Mysore in March 2025, but they kept going and wrapped up strong in Thailand.
Sardar 2 is produced by Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment, and it’s coming out in five languages—Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada—so it’s set to reach a huge audience. The first Sardar won hearts with its mix of spy action and family drama, showing a cop digging into his dad’s secret spy life. The sequel looks even bigger, with Karthi teasing a “bigger war” at the teaser launch. Malavika Mohanan couldn’t stop gushing about the experience, saying it was totally different from anything she’s done before and that Karthi was an absolute “gem” to work with.
Now that they’re done shooting, the team’s diving into post-production. There was talk of a Diwali 2025 release, but it might end up being December instead. Either way, I can’t wait to see more! The first Sardar was such a fun ride, and with P.S. Mithran and Karthi back to bring more action and emotion, Sardar 2 feels like it could be something really special. Stay tuned—this one’s gonna be worth the wait!
