Get ready for a wild ride with Son of Sardaar 2, the big sequel to 2012’s Son of Sardaar, dropping in theaters on July 25, 2025! Ajay Devgn is back, joined by Mrunal Thakur and Sanjay Dutt, in what’s shaping up to be a fun mix of laughs, action, and that classic Punjabi vibe. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, this spiritual sequel brings a fresh story with all the masala you loved from the original. Here’s the scoop on what’s cooking with Son of Sardaar 2 and why it’s got fans buzzing.

A New Story with Familiar Vibes

This isn’t your typical sequel—Son of Sardaar 2 keeps the spirit of the 2012 hit but spins a brand-new tale. The first film had Ajay Devgn as Jaswinder “Jassi” Singh Randhawa, caught in a hilarious family feud with Sanjay Dutt’s Balwinder “Billu” Singh Sandhu, packed with comedy, fights, and romance. It made ₹105 crore in India on a ₹30 crore budget, a solid win despite mixed reviews. Now, the sequel’s shaking things up. Word is, it follows 12-year-old Aarav and his buddies in a village, chasing a rare golden mango during a Mango Festival, learning about teamwork and friendship. But don’t worry—there’s still some gritty gang war action between Punjabi and Bihari dons, keeping Jassi (Devgn) and maybe Billu (Dutt) in the mix.

A Star-Studded Lineup

Ajay Devgn’s slipping back into Jassi’s turbaned, mustachioed charm, ready to win hearts again. Sanjay Dutt’s on board too, likely as Billu, though he hit a snag with a UK visa issue tied to his 1993 arrest, so Ravi Kishan stepped in for his UK scenes. Mrunal Thakur, fresh off Sita Ramam, is the new leading lady, taking over from Sonakshi Sinha, and fans are hyped for her rom-com chemistry with Devgn. The cast is loaded with Ravi Kishan, Chunky Pandey, Deepak Dobriyal, Kubbra Sait, Neeru Bajwa, Vindu Dara Singh, Sharat Saxena, Roshni Walia, Ashwini Kalsekar, and the late Mukul Dev in his final role, adding a touching note.

There’s been some behind-the-scenes drama. Vijay Raaz got dropped early for reported unprofessional behavior, with Sanjay Mishra stepping in and calling Devgn a loyal pal. Dutt’s visa mess made headlines, but he’s confirmed he’s still in the film. These bumps haven’t dulled the excitement—fans are stoked to see Devgn and Dutt face off again.

Big Production, Big Vibes

Vijay Kumar Arora’s calling the shots, with Jio Studios, Devgn Films, and producers Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, N.R. Pachisia, and Pravin Talreja backing this big-budget flick. Shooting started in July 2024, hitting up Edinburgh, London, Scotland, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, with cool scenes like a lively baraat and some intense action. Aseem Bajaj’s cinematography is set to capture all the color and energy, though we’re still waiting to hear who’s doing the music—fingers crossed it’s as catchy as the original’s Himesh Reshammiya tunes.

The production’s had its challenges, from the original’s 2012 screen clash with Jab Tak Hai Jaan to this sequel’s visa and casting hiccups. But Devgn’s kept the hype alive, sharing a muhurat ceremony video on Instagram in August 2024 from a gurdwara, and dropping a fierce first poster of his Sardaar look. It’s got fans ready for more of that Son of Sardaar magic.

What’s in Store

Son of Sardaar 2 is aiming to be a full-on family entertainer, mixing goofy laughs with action and a bit of heart. The Mango Festival storyline sounds like a fun, kid-friendly twist, but the gang war plot keeps things spicy for the grown-ups. With a U/A rating and probably a 2.5-hour runtime, it’s got its sights set on North Indian crowds and overseas fans, like the first film’s $3 million haul abroad. After theaters, it’ll likely stream on JioCinema, but no OTT date’s out yet.

The first Son of Sardaar was a love-it-or-hate-it vibe—fans dug the energy, but critics called it loud and messy, averaging a 2.5/5. This time, with a new director and a tighter story (hopefully), it’s got a shot at winning over doubters. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh’s January 2025 post locking in the release date has everyone counting down.

Can It Deliver?

This is Ajay Devgn’s fourth big release of 2025, after Azaad, Raid 2, and De De Pyaar De 2, proving he’s the king of sequels. With a ₹60-80 crore budget (based on industry guesses), it needs ₹150-200 crore to be a hit, which feels doable with Devgn’s star power and the original’s fanbase. But it’s up against Housefull 5 and Metro In Dino in July, so it’ll need some strong word-of-mouth to stand out.
