Obsession has managed to outperform Michael at the box office: the new horror film written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker has taken theaters and critics by storm, even becoming a social media sensation. But it seems there are no limits to its success. Obsession, in fact, is poised to break a record and officially make cinema history: with a budget of just $750,000, as of this writing, the film has grossed nearly $60 million. At this rate, with a 30% increase at the box office last week, the next milestone will be $70 million in box office receipts. But there is still a great opportunity for Curry Barker, making his big-screen debut.
Should Obsession surpass that figure (and the path seems wide open), it would rightfully go down in cinema history because at that point it will have generated a return on investment of over 100 times. An incredible record that has so far been firmly held by Paranormal Activity in 2009, which grossed nearly $200,000 at the global box office on a budget of $450,000. In turn, the Paramount horror film had snatched the record from The Blair Witch Project, which grossed about $250 million worldwide and had a budget similar to that of Curry Barker’s film.
People are already calling *Obsession* the horror film of the year: the story follows Bear Bailey, who has long been in love with his childhood friend Nikki. One day, he buys a wand that promises to grant any wish: his wish is for her to love him more than anyone else in the world. But you have to be very careful what you wish for: the line between dream and nightmare is thinner than you might think.
