Box Office: Ghostbusters and Civil War movie on top

The Italian box office is dominated by Ghostbusters, while the US box office is led by Alex Garland's new film.

The love for the cult Ghostbusters saga is reconfirmed with these encouraging figures from the weekend box office. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire arrives in Italian cinemas and is already climbing the rankings, placing itself in first place. The film directed by Gil Kenan grossed 241,329 euros over the weekend (881,131 since its release on April 11). The film unites the new generation – Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, and Logan Kim – with the old one – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.

After the Easter record, the comedy Un mondo a parte continues to dominate the Italian box office. The film, in its third weekend in theaters, grosses another 196,025 euros, reaching a total of 5,440,745 euros. This week there were another 28,967 theater attendances for the comedy directed by Riccardo Milani and starring Antonio Albanese and Virginia Raffaele. In third place at the Italian box office - according to Cinetel data - we find the fourth Kung Fu Panda film with 135,958 euros. Since its release (March 21st) the animated film has grossed a total of 10,214,355 euros.

Fourth position for the new chapter of the MonsterVerse, the clash between monsters Godzilla x Kong – The New Empire which grossed 76,981 euros (with 9,681 admissions in theaters). In total, the Warner Bros. film grossed 3,629,730 euros. It arrived in Italian cinemas on March 28, exactly like Un mondo a parte.

Closing the top 5 of the Italian box office is a new entry: Gloria!, the debut film by Margherita Vicario selected in competition at the 74th Berlin Film Festival. The acclaimed film grossed 52,760 euros (147,332 in total). Glory! it is the story of Teresa, a young woman with a visionary talent who transcends the centuries and invents rebellious, pop music.


The US box office

Civil War, the new film by Alex Garland, arrived in US cinemas on April 11th (it arrives here on Thursday the 18th), whose debut in US theaters almost made $26 million, and is enjoying record success. A record for its distribution company, A24. Costing 50 million dollars - the most expensive for an independent production company - for now, it is an excellent success. Second place for Godzilla and Kong – The New Empire, while Ghostbusters – Frozen Empire is third. Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune – Part 2 complete the top 5 at the US box office. The new Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment production dedicated to MonsterVerse grossed 158 million dollars domestically, and 437 globally, after being first in the charts for two weeks.

The takings of the new Ghostbusters film, produced by Sony, almost reached 100 million at the national box office. The animated film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, however, earns 5 and a half million this weekend. Its overall box office is $174 million, $452 million worldwide. The Dune sequel is still the highest-grossing film of 2024: $272 million in North America and $684 globally.
